What Is the Litmus Strip Used For?
Litmus is a dye obtained from lichens that changes colour with acidity, and it is usually the first indicator students meet. Touching a drop of the test liquid to a blue and a red strip sorts it into one of three groups: acids turn blue litmus red, bases turn red litmus blue, and neutral liquids leave both unchanged. That is the core test in the acids, bases and salts chapters of CBSE and ICSE class 7 and class 10 science, where students check lemon juice, soap solution, vinegar or baking soda solution, and it remains a quick bench check in college and research labs. Litmus shows only whether a liquid is acidic or basic; for an approximate pH value, a universal indicator or pH paper is used instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do litmus strips show an acid or a base?
Blue litmus turns red in an acid, and red litmus turns blue in a base. A neutral liquid leaves both colours as they are.
Why are both red and blue strips needed?
Each colour detects change in one direction only: blue reveals acids and red reveals bases. Testing with both tells an acid, a base and a neutral liquid apart.
Can a litmus strip measure pH?
No. It indicates acidic or basic but not the pH value; use universal pH paper or a universal indicator for an approximate reading.
What is the shelf life of litmus strips?
Shelf life depends on the chemical, its grade and storage conditions; ask us for the expiry date of the batch you are quoted.
Who manufactures the Litmus Strip?
JLab — Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd — at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of chemistry lab supplies and teaching equipment in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The strips are produced at JLab’s own works rather than bought from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers get them direct from the maker, and repeat batches are handled by the same team. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Sri Lanka in South Asia, Mozambique in East Africa, Morocco in North Africa, Sweden in Northern Europe and Mexico in North America. For tender purchases, see the JLab lab tenders page.
