Product Code : EL-SLE-4628
Jlab Export is a leading Magdeburg Hemisphere (Aluminium Powder Coated) Manufacturer, and suppliers in India

Magdeburg Hemisphere (Aluminium Powder Coated) (code EL-SLE-4628) is a pair of powder-coated metal hemispheres whose rims are made to fit each other, used in school and college physics to demonstrate the force of atmospheric pressure. With the rims greased and the air pumped out, the two halves cannot be pulled apart. It is made by Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab) at its works in Ambala, India.

What Are Magdeburg Hemispheres Used For?

The hemispheres recreate the experiment Otto von Guericke staged at Magdeburg in the seventeenth century, when teams of horses could not separate two evacuated half-spheres. In class, a thin film of grease is spread on the rims, the halves are pressed together and the air inside is pumped out. Nothing inside now pushes outwards, while the surrounding air keeps pressing on every part of the outer surface, so the halves are held together with a force that grows with the area enclosed by the rim — far more than two students pulling on them can overcome. Let air back in and they fall apart at once. The demonstration brings the atmospheric-pressure lessons of class 8 science and secondary-school physics to life, and pairs well with suction-cup, barometer and pump examples. Afterwards wipe off the old grease, keep the rims free of dents and scratches so they continue to seal, and re-grease before the next demonstration.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do Magdeburg hemispheres demonstrate?
The force of atmospheric pressure. Once the air is removed from inside the closed pair, the pressure of the outside air holds the halves together so firmly that they cannot be pulled apart by hand.

Why are the rims greased?
Grease seals the joint between the two rims. Without an airtight seal, air would leak back in and the hemispheres would separate easily.

Is a vacuum pump included?
No pump is part of this listing, which covers the pair of hemispheres. A vacuum pump is needed to evacuate them; JLab can quote one with the hemispheres if you ask.

What is the finish, and what metal are the hemispheres?
They are listed as aluminium powder coated. Ask JLab to confirm the base metal and dimensions with your quotation if your tender specifies them.

Who manufactures these hemispheres?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab) makes them at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India, and quotes for them directly as the manufacturer.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of physics teaching apparatus and other laboratory equipment in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. These hemispheres are produced at JLab’s own works rather than bought in through a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers buy factory-direct; each pair is visually checked before dispatch, and repeat orders are handled by the maker. The company is registered for GST under GSTIN 06AADCJ9848D1ZE and holds Legal Entity Identifier 549300DTGS77DGYD6N03. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — Mongolia in East Asia, Barbados in Central America and the Caribbean, Tajikistan in Central Asia, Tunisia in North Africa and Estonia in Northern Europe, for example. Tender details are on the JLab lab tenders page.

Air Pressure and Vacuum Apparatus

  • Small Vacuum Pumps — a two-stage vacuum pump with a built-in gauge; ask JLab about connecting it to the hemispheres.
  • Bell in Bell Jar — a bell jar with plate and vacuum pump plate for other vacuum demonstrations.
  • Lift Pump — a glass lift pump model showing how air pressure raises water.
  • Aneroid Barometer Demonstration — a demonstration barometer for measuring the pressure of the atmosphere.
