Reading the Metre Stick
The millimetre marks let a length be read to the nearest millimetre, while the decimetre marks help pupils count off tenths of a metre. Looking straight down on the mark avoids parallax, and measuring from a mark rather than from the end of the stick avoids error from a worn end. Measuring one object on both faces and dividing the centimetre reading by the inch reading gives about 2.54, a quick check of the inch-to-centimetre conversion.
