Getting a True Reading
Set the stand on a level bench away from iron, steel stands and current-carrying leads, and let the needle settle without touching it. The cup bearing keeps friction at the pivot small, so the needle comes to rest along the horizontal part of the Earth’s field. That direction is magnetic north, which differs from geographic north by the local declination; measuring the angle the field makes with the horizontal needs a dip needle, pivoted to swing vertically.
Brought near a magnet, the north end of the needle swings towards the magnet’s south pole, a quick way to identify the poles of an unmarked magnet.
