Why the Ball Ends Help
On an ordinary bar magnet the poles are spread over the end faces, which makes the distance between two poles hard to define. In a long, thin needle with true poles, each pole lies close to a ball end, so the separation between poles of two needles can be measured from ball to ball. That suits it to showing how the force between poles falls off as they are moved apart, and to clean demonstrations of like poles repelling and unlike poles attracting.
Bring each ball in turn near a pivoted magnetic needle to find which end is north, then test pieces of iron, brass, aluminium and wood to sort magnetic from non-magnetic materials. Keep the needle away from strong magnets that could reverse its poles.
