The Prism as a Sighting and Reflecting Target
The instrument’s crosshairs are pointed at the centre of the prism to read the horizontal and vertical angles to that point. With a total station, the same prism also sends the EDM beam back to the instrument for the distance, and the silver coating on its reflecting faces helps return the light.
