Working with the Pole at a Survey Point
The pole is stood on the point and kept vertical, with the prism facing the instrument. The total station sights the prism, and its EDM sends a beam that the prism reflects straight back, giving the slope distance. The height of the prism above the point is entered in the instrument, so each reading is reduced to the ground mark rather than to the prism itself.
