Why Use a Floating Head Design?
In plant service the floating head design is chosen when the tubes and the shell run at very different temperatures, or when the shell-side fluid leaves deposits. The free end lets the tubes expand and contract without straining the shell, and the tube bundle can be withdrawn so that the shell side and the outside of the tubes can be cleaned.
