What Is the Neubauer Chamber Used For?
A Neubauer chamber, often called a haemocytometer, holds a thin layer of diluted sample of known depth under a cover glass, so the cells lying over a known area of the grid can be counted under the microscope. From the number counted, the area of the squares used, the chamber depth and the dilution, students calculate the number of cells per unit volume. In physiology, zoology and laboratory technology practicals it is the classic tool for counting red and white blood cells in diluted blood; biology classes use the same method for yeast and other cells in suspension. Because the two chambers are filled separately, two samples — or two fillings of one sample — can be counted on one slide and compared. Clean it with water and lens tissue after use.
