What Is an Optical Square Used For?
An optical square lets a surveyor set out a right angle on the ground quickly, without setting up a theodolite. It works on the pentaprism principle: a five-sided prism turns the line of sight through a constant 90° even when the prism is rotated slightly, so small movements of the hand have little effect on the angle. With two pentaprisms it is used to place points on a straight line, take offsets from a survey line to nearby features, and set out curves.
In teaching, it is used in chain-surveying practicals for civil engineering and ITI surveying students, and in maths labs to show how right angles are laid out in the field.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Model — this pentaprism optical square or another one from the range below; quote the product code.
- Quantity — for example one per survey group in a practical class.
- Other survey items — ranging rods or a cross staff for the same enquiry.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an optical square used for?
For laying off angles that are multiples of 90° or 45° in surveying, and for placing points on a line, offset measurements and setting out curves.
What optics does this optical square have?
Two optical glass pentaprisms mounted in a sturdy housing.
How does it differ from a cross staff?
A cross staff gives lines of sight at right angles through sight vanes on a head carried on a pole; the optical square is a small hand instrument that uses glass pentaprisms instead of open sights.
What information is needed for an export quotation?
The quantity, destination country and port or city, delivery terms (for example FOB or CIF), packing needs and any tender reference.
Who manufactures these optical squares?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, trading as JLab, makes them at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India, and quotes for them directly.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer in India of maths lab equipment, surveying aids and civil engineering instruments for teaching, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The optical square is built at JLab’s own works, not bought from a trader, so colleges, dealers and importers buy it factory-direct and repeat orders come from the same manufacturer. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Uzbekistan in Central Asia, Bangladesh in South Asia, Japan in East Asia, France in Western Europe and the USA in North America. Institutions buying by tender can use the JLab lab tenders page.
