What Is a Metal Ranging Rod Used For?

In chain and tape surveying, ranging rods are set up at stations and intermediate points so that a straight survey line can be lined up by eye between them. The alternate orange and white bands make each rod stand out against grass, soil and sky from a distance, and the iron shoe is the end that goes into the ground.

Ranging rods are standard kit for surveying practicals in civil engineering colleges, polytechnics and ITI courses, for geography fieldwork, and for outdoor maths activities on measuring distances in school grounds.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Length and type — 2 m or 3 m single rods, the 2 m 2-fold rod or the 3 m 3-fold rod.
  • Quantity per size — ranging a line uses several rods at a time, so plan rods for each survey group.
  • Other field instruments — a cross staff or optical square, linked below, can be quoted on the same enquiry.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a ranging rod used for?
It marks stations and points on the ground so that straight survey lines can be ranged and measured between them in chain or tape surveying.

What is this ranging rod made of?
Steel conduit pipe of 25 mm diameter, painted alternately in international orange and white, with a strong iron shoe fitted at the bottom.

Which sizes are available?
Four: 2 m single, 3 m single, 2 m 2-fold and 3 m 3-fold. State the size and number of each in your enquiry.

Why is it painted orange and white?
The alternate bands of contrasting colour make the rod easy to pick out from a distance, which helps the surveyor line up points accurately.

What details are needed for an export quotation?
Send the sizes and quantities, the destination country and port or city, your preferred delivery terms (for example FOB or CIF), any packing or marking needs, and the tender reference where relevant.

Who manufactures this ranging rod?
JLab (Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd) makes it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of maths lab equipment, surveying aids and school laboratory apparatus in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. These rods are fabricated and painted at JLab’s own works rather than bought from a trader, so colleges, schools, dealers and importers buy direct from the factory, and repeat orders in matching sizes come from the same maker. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Sudan in North Africa, Namibia in Southern Africa, Panama in Central America and the Caribbean, Mexico in North America and Iceland in Northern Europe. Tender information is on the JLab lab tenders page.
