What Is the Barchan Dune Model Used For?
A barchan is a dune shaped like a crescent, with its two horns pointing downwind. Wind drives sand grains up the long, gentle windward slope; at the crest they spill down the short, steep slip face on the sheltered side, so the whole dune creeps forward with the horns leading. Barchans usually form where the wind blows mainly from one direction, the supply of sand is limited and the ground beneath is firm and fairly flat.
A model shows this shape far better than a flat drawing, so a class can work out the wind direction from the dune itself. It suits school geography lessons on the work of wind and the class 11 physical geography topic of landforms made by wind.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a barchan?
A crescent-shaped sand dune whose horns point downwind, with a gentle windward slope and a steep slip face.
Which way does a barchan move?
Downwind. Sand blown over the crest slides down the slip face, so the dune advances in the direction the wind blows, horns first.
What size is the model and what is it made of?
This listing does not state them. JLab will give the size, material and a current photo with your quotation.
Who manufactures this model?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, trading as JLab, makes it in Ambala, Haryana, and quotes for it directly.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a maker of geography lab equipment and other school teaching aids in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. Its landform models come from its own works rather than from traders, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers deal with the producer itself, and repeat orders are handled by the same team. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Paraguay in South America, Papua New Guinea in Oceania, Namibia in Southern Africa, Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia and El Salvador in Central America and the Caribbean.
