Reading a Dimension on the Reticle
The reticle sits inside the eyepiece, so its scale appears over the image of the part. Set the zero of the scale on one edge of the feature and read the other edge against the graduations, in inches or millimetres as the drawing requires. Because the reticle rotates, the scale can be turned to lie along a feature at any angle instead of moving the part.
