What Is a Slide Mounter Used For?
Ringing means laying a thin, even circle of sealant or varnish on a microscope slide. A small finder ring drawn around a tiny object, such as a diatom, lets it be found quickly under the objective. On mounts made with round coverslips, a ring of sealant around the coverslip edge closes the mount neatly, and a thin ring of a contrasting colour on top marks which side of the slide faces up. For whole mounts of thicker specimens, such as small arthropods like ticks, a raised support ring is laid down first — shellac works well — so the coverslip rests on the ring instead of flattening the specimen. These tasks belong to permanent slide making in college zoology and botany departments, histology teaching labs and amateur or research microscopy.
