Violet for Sulphide, Red for Ketones
Added to an alkaline solution containing sulphide ions, nitroprusside gives a violet colour, which confirms sulphur in a sodium fusion extract and sulphide in salt analysis. Acetone and other ketones made alkaline with sodium hydroxide give a red colour with the reagent instead.
