Reading the Bubble
The vial is filled with liquid apart from a small air bubble, which always moves towards the higher end. When the surface is level, the bubble rests centrally between the marks. To check the level itself, take a reading, turn it end for end on the same spot and read again: if the bubble sits in the same place both times, the level reads true.
