Reading the Current and Power Ratings
The two ratings agree with P = I²R: 5.7 A through the full 10 Ω dissipates about 320 W, and 8.0 A gives 640 W, which the winding can take for no more than 15 minutes. With the moving contact set so that only part of the winding is in circuit, the power is lower but the current limit still applies, because the same current flows through the turns that remain. Near the limit, go by the ammeter reading rather than the contact position.
Wiring It into a Circuit
Connected through one end and the moving contact, it is a variable series resistance that sets the current, for example to vary a lamp’s brightness or a coil’s field. Connected across the supply through both ends, with the output taken between one end and the moving contact, it becomes a potential divider giving any voltage from zero up to the supply voltage.
