Sucrose (code EL-CL-12360) is cane sugar, a disaccharide in which glucose and fructose are joined through their anomeric carbons, leaving no free reducing group, so it is a non-reducing sugar. Practical classes use it as the negative control in sugar tests and for acid hydrolysis. JLab produces it for laboratory use in Ambala, India.

Why It Fails the Reducing Sugar Tests
Sucrose leaves Fehling and Benedict solutions blue and gives no silver mirror with Tollens reagent. Boiling it with dilute hydrochloric acid hydrolyses it to glucose and fructose, and once the solution has been neutralised, Benedict solution gives the brick-red precipitate. Concentrated sulphuric acid chars it to carbon.
Related Sugar Test Reagents
- Benedict Solution — stays blue with sucrose until the sugar is hydrolysed.
- D-Glucose Powder Anhydrous — a reducing sugar for the positive control.
- Sulphuric Acid Concentrated — dehydrates sucrose, leaving black carbon.
Carbohydrate test reagents are in Chemistry Lab.
