Soap Films on the Wire Frames
Dip a frame in soap solution and lift it out: the film shrinks to the smallest area its wire edges allow. In the tetrahedral and cube frames the films meet inside the frame, always three to an edge at equal angles, and the ring with a half ring shows two films sharing one boundary. On the rectangular frame the film pulls the movable side inwards, and the force that holds it still is F = 2γL, where L is the length of the movable side and the factor 2 counts the film’s two surfaces.
Using the Pendant Ring and Dynamometer
Hang the steel ring from the dynamometer, lower it until it touches the liquid in the cuvette, then raise it slowly. The reading climbs as the surface clings to the ring and drops when the ring breaks free; that extra pull, divided by the total edge length in contact with the liquid, gives an estimate of the surface tension.
