Taking a Reading
Close the jaws first and check that the vernier zero lines up with the main-scale zero; any offset is the zero error, which is subtracted, with its sign, from every reading. Then grip the object between the jaws, note the main-scale mark just before the vernier zero, and find the one vernier line that coincides exactly with a main-scale line. The reading is the main-scale value plus that vernier division number multiplied by the least count.
How the Vernier Beats a Plain Rule
On a plain rule the last figure is an estimate. The vernier scale is divided so that its divisions are slightly shorter than those of the main scale, and the least count is one main-scale division minus one vernier division. Finding the coinciding line replaces the estimate with a reading, which is how mechanical interpolation raises the resolution in tasks such as measuring a pendulum bob or a small cylinder.
