How the Vernier Scale Is Read
Close the jaws on the object, tighten the lock screw and read the main scale just before the zero of the Vernier scale to get the whole millimetres. Next, find the Vernier line that coincides exactly with a main-scale line; its count multiplied by the least count, 0.1 mm or 0.05 mm depending on the version ordered, is added to the main-scale reading. Closing the jaws first and checking that the two zeros line up shows whether a zero correction is needed. The 0.05 mm version resolves finer differences, while the 0.1 mm version is quicker for beginners to read.
Four Kinds of Measurement
The large outside jaws take external diameters and thicknesses, the smaller inside jaws take bores and tube diameters, the depth bar measures holes and slots, and the step faces measure the height of a shoulder. That makes one caliper enough for the diameter of a sphere or cylinder, the internal diameter of a beaker and the depth of a container in a single practical session.
