Demonstrating Archimedes’ Principle

Hang the bucket and cylinder together from a spring balance and note the reading. Lower them until the cylinder is fully under water in a beaker, with the bucket still above the surface: the reading drops. Now fill the empty bucket with water to the brim. The balance returns to its reading in air, because the water added has exactly the volume of the cylinder, which shows the upthrust equals the weight of water displaced.

Getting a Clean Result

Choose a beaker wide enough that the cylinder hangs clear of its sides. Top up the bucket with a dropper near the end so it is exactly full without spilling over. Dry the brass parts after the lesson so the cylinder keeps sliding freely into the bucket.
