Why Every Limb Fills to One Level
All four limbs open into the same horizontal tube, so the liquid in them is one connected body. At rest the pressure along that bottom tube must be equal everywhere, and that pressure depends only on the height of liquid above it, so the surfaces come to one level even though a wide limb holds more liquid than a narrow one. Pour into any single limb and the other three rise with it. The same idea explains why water stands at one height in a kettle and its spout, and how an overhead tank feeds taps placed below its level.
Using and Cleaning the Set
Add a little ink or food colour to the water so the levels show clearly through the glass. Fill slowly through one limb so no air is trapped in the horizontal tube, as a bubble there can hold one level out of line. Rinse with clean water after use and leave the set upright on its stand to drain.
