Running the Experiment
Pin a sheet of paper to the board and hang weights on the threads until the knot where they meet comes to rest. Mark the line of each thread on the paper, then draw two of the forces to scale along their lines from the knot and complete the parallelogram. Its diagonal should match the third force in size and point exactly opposite to it, which is the law the board is built to show.
Tips for Cleaner Results
Because the pulleys clamp to the board, they can be moved to give different angles between the threads, so one set-up can be repeated with several load combinations. Tap the board lightly before marking so pulley friction does not hold the knot off its true position, and keep the threads clear of the board face. Wall mounting holds the board upright, which keeps the threads hanging freely.
