Taking a Reading
Hold the gauge by its insulated frame, place the wire or sheet between the anvil and spindle, and turn the thimble only by the ratchet until it slips. Because the ratchet applies the same light pressure each time, repeat readings agree. Lock the spindle, then add the sleeve reading to the thimble division on the datum line multiplied by 0.01 mm. Close the faces before starting and note any zero error so it can be subtracted from every result.
Why the Frame Is Insulated
Steel expands as it warms, and a hand wrapped round a bare frame can open the gap enough to matter when readings are taken to 0.01 mm. The insulated grip keeps body heat away from the frame, while the setting rod lets the zero be checked and reset when needed, so the gauge stays dependable over many practical classes.
