Where a Steel Scale Earns Its Place
Stainless steel does not swell, warp or soak up spills the way a wooden rule can, so the edge stays straight and can double as a guide for ruling lines. A wipe with a damp cloth cleans it after work near water baths or with coloured solutions. The metal is cool and rigid in the hand, which helps when holding the scale flat against a pendulum string or a stretched spring.
Getting an Accurate Reading
Lay the graduated edge right against the object and look straight down on the mark so the reading is not shifted by parallax. If the end of a well-used scale has picked up knocks, start the measurement from the 1 cm line and subtract it, rather than trusting the zero end. Use the inch edge when a drawing or older textbook gives dimensions in inches.
