When the Longer Range Is Needed
A 300 mm beam spans work that a short caliper cannot reach across: wide beakers and containers, long rods and blocks, and larger machined parts checked during quality control. On long measurements, keep the beam square to the object and support its far end so the jaws sit flat, since a slight tilt along a long beam adds error to the reading.
Reading the Scales and Checking Zero
Whole millimetres come from the main scale up to the Vernier zero; the Vernier division that lines up exactly with a main-scale mark, times the least count of 0.1 mm or 0.05 mm, supplies the fraction. Before measuring, close the jaws and confirm that both zeros coincide. When the jaws are set in an awkward spot, tighten the lock screw and bring the caliper into good light to read it.
