Weighing in Air, Then in Water
Tie the solid to the hook with fine thread and weigh it in air. Then place a beaker of water so the solid hangs fully under the surface without touching the glass, and weigh it again. The loss in weight equals the weight of water displaced, so specific gravity is the weight in air divided by that loss. Weighing the same solid immersed in a second liquid gives the liquid’s specific gravity as its loss of weight divided by the loss in water.
Setting Up for Steady Readings
Turn the levelling screw until the spirit level bubble is centred before each session, and keep the case closed while the reading settles so draughts do not disturb it. Lift the weights with forceps rather than fingers, and dry the specimen and thread before every weighing in air.
