Density of a Small Solid
Float the hydrometer in water and add weights to the upper pan until it sinks to its set immersion level; note the load. Put the solid on the upper pan and find the smaller load now needed: the difference is the solid’s weight in air. Move the solid to the lower pan, under water, and find the load once more. The extra weight needed this time is the upthrust on the solid, and its specific gravity is its weight in air divided by that upthrust.
Density of a Liquid
Weigh the hydrometer itself on a balance. Find the pan load that sinks it to the same level first in water and then in the test liquid; the liquid’s specific gravity is the hydrometer weight plus its load in the liquid, divided by the hydrometer weight plus its load in water.
