Taking a Reading
Pour the sample into a tall, clean jar and lower the hydrometer in gently, giving it a slight spin so it floats clear of the sides and sheds any clinging air bubbles. When it has settled, bring your eye level with the liquid surface and read the scale where the surface cuts it. The scale is calibrated at 20 °C, so readings are truest with the sample at that temperature.
Which Liquids It Suits
The 1.000–2.000 range covers liquids denser than water, such as strong salt or sugar solutions and acids; a liquid lighter than water needs a hydrometer with a lower range. Rinse the hydrometer with water after each sample and dry it before storing, and never let it drop into the jar, since a knock to the bulb can crack it.
