Comparing Two Liquids
Stand the two long limbs in beakers, one holding water and the other the liquid under test. Draw air out through the rubber tube on the centre limb and close the clip: the reduced pressure lifts both liquids, and the denser one rises less. Both columns are held up by the same pressure difference, so height multiplied by density is equal for the two, and the relative density of the test liquid is the water column height divided by the test liquid’s column height.
Reading the Columns
Slide the two distance rods until their lower ends just meet the liquid surfaces in the beakers, then read each column height on its scale from that level. Release the clip, apply a different amount of suction and read again; the ratio of heights should hold steady, and averaging several pairs reduces reading error.
