Spherometer

Product Code : EL-PLEA-13378
Jlab Export is a leading Spherometer Manufacturer, and suppliers in India

Spherometer (code EL-PLEA-13378) is an economy double-disc spherometer for measuring the radius of curvature of a lens or other curved surface. Three painted steel legs stand on a circular metal table of at least 50 mm diameter, and a steel screw runs in long adjustable brass bearings, with a circular scale on the screw and a vertical scale on the table. JLab builds the instrument in Ambala, India.

Measuring Radius of Curvature

Stand the spherometer on a flat glass plate, turn the screw until its tip just touches, and note the vertical and circular scale readings. Move it onto the lens, adjust the screw until the tip touches the curved surface with all three legs resting on it, and read again; the difference between the two readings is the sagitta h. With l as the mean distance between the legs, the radius follows from R = l² / (6h) + h / 2. Turning slowly near contact, and watching for the instrument to rock, avoids overshooting the touch point.

How the Instrument Is Built

The legs are set accurately on the table so the screw tip sits at the centre of the triangle they form. The brass bearings can be adjusted to take up play in the thread, and the circular scale turning with the screw is read against the vertical scale, which counts whole turns while the circular scale gives the fraction of a turn. Besides routine physics practicals, spherometers are used in optometry to check lens surfaces.
