Small Piston, Large Piston
Push down on the 15 mm piston and the 30 mm piston rises, because the pressure set up in the fluid acts equally on both. The larger cylinder has twice the diameter and so four times the piston area, which means the same pressure gives it four times the force, while it moves only a quarter of the distance. Students feel this trade of force for distance when one presses the small piston and a partner tries to hold the large one down.
Preparing for the Demonstration
The effect is clearest with liquid in the cylinders and tube and no trapped air, since a bubble compresses and soaks up part of the push. Move both pistons through their full travel a few times before the class starts, and wipe them dry afterwards so they keep sliding smoothly.
