What Is the Comets and Meteors Chart Used For?

Comets are lumps of ice, dust and rock from the cold outer solar system that travel on long, highly elliptical orbits. As a comet nears the Sun its ice turns to gas, forming a glowing head, or coma, and tails that always point away from the Sun; Halley’s Comet is the most famous example of a comet that returns again and again. Meteoroids are much smaller fragments of rock or metal. When one rushes into Earth’s atmosphere it heats up and burns as a bright streak — a meteor, or “shooting star” — and any piece that survives to reach the ground is a meteorite. Meteor showers happen when Earth passes through the trail of debris a comet has left along its orbit.

The chart helps teachers explain these terms, which students often mix up, in school science and geography lessons on the solar system, in astronomy lab sessions and on observation nights before a meteor shower. The listing does not describe the panels, so ask JLab for a preview image if you need to check the diagrams and labels. Because the laminate is markable and washable, students can mark orbits or label parts with a whiteboard marker and wipe them off afterwards.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the minimum order is 10 charts.
  • Series titles — Universal (Life Cycle of a Star) is the companion astronomy chart in the same format.
  • Solar system aids — a solar system chart or a planet model, if you are equipping a full astronomy wall.
  • Delivery terms — destination, port or city, FOB or CIF and any tender reference.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a meteor and a meteorite?
A meteor is the streak of light seen when a meteoroid burns up in the atmosphere; a meteorite is a piece that survives and lands on the ground. The chart is designed for teaching distinctions like this.

Does the chart show a particular comet?
The listing does not describe the illustrations. Ask JLab for a preview image to see exactly what is drawn.

Is there a matching chart?
Yes — Universal (Life Cycle of a Star) is listed in the same series and format, and many schools order both.

How large and heavy is it?
58 x 90 cm overall and 228 g. It rolls on its plastic rollers to about 58 x 4 x 2 cm.

What language is it printed in?
English only. It is offset printed in full colour with CTP technology and laminated both sides with 30 micron heat-sealable polyester.

What should an export enquiry include?
The quantity, destination country and port or city, the delivery terms you prefer, packing or labelling needs and any tender reference.

Who supplies the chart?
JLab — Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd of Ambala, Haryana, India — supplies it and quotes for it directly.
