What Is a Portable Three-Phase Variac Used For?
In electrical machines and power laboratories a portable three-phase variac is carried to the experiment and used to start three-phase motors at reduced voltage, to run no-load and short-circuit tests on three-phase transformers, and to vary the supply to three-phase heaters and other loads. Because an autotransformer changes the voltage magnetically rather than by switching parts of each cycle, as a thyristor controller does, the output stays close to a sine wave — the reason distortion is negligible — which matters when meters and motors must see a clean supply.
