Weighing by Difference
For a solid that absorbs water from the air, weigh the stoppered bottle with the sample in it, tip the portion you need into the beaker or flask, close the bottle and weigh it again: the loss in mass is the amount transferred. The stopper stays in place whenever the bottle is on the pan, so room moisture has little chance to change the reading. Handle the bottle with tongs or a folded paper strip, since grease from fingers adds mass.
Looking After the Ground Stopper
Keep each stopper with its own bottle and brush any powder off the joint before closing; grit trapped between the ground surfaces spoils the airtight seal and can make the stopper stick.
