Jlab Export is a leading Wood Microtome Manufacturer, and suppliers in India
Wood Microtome (code EL-WM-2333) is a heavy-duty, Jung-type (pattern) microtome for sectioning hard materials such as wood and bone in botany, forestry and anatomy laboratories. It takes specimens up to 8 x 5 cm in an 80 x 50 mm object vice and cuts sections up to 30 microns thick in 1-micron steps. It is made by Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab) at its works in Ambala, India.

How Does It Compare with Other JLab Sliding-Type Microtomes?
| Model | Specimen size (as listed) | Section range (as listed) | Slide length and other details |
|---|---|---|---|
| This microtome (EL-WM-2333) | Up to 8 x 5 cm; vice opening 80 x 50 mm | Up to 30 microns in 1-micron steps | 42 cm slide ways; heavy-duty razor, two vices and three object holders supplied |
| Sledge Microtome | Blocks up to 30 x 30 mm | 1–10 microns in 0.5-micron increments | 400 mm horizontal slide for the knife block; paraffin and celloidin; freezing attachment possible |
| Sliding Microtome | Object stage opening 31 x 26 mm | 1–50 microns in one-micron steps | 27 cm sliding track; paraffin and celloidin specimens; supplied in a wooden case |
Choose the Wood Microtome when the specimens are large or hard — timber blocks, stems and bone: its vice and specimen size are much larger than those of the other two models. The Sledge Microtome is listed for very thin paraffin and celloidin sections, and the Sliding Microtome offers a wider 1–50 micron range for medium-sized blocks.
What Is the Wood Microtome Used For?
Hard plant and animal tissues are difficult to cut on an ordinary rotary microtome, which is built for wax blocks. A wood microtome holds the specimen rigidly in a heavy vice and cuts it with a stiff, backed razor guided on long slide ways, so even dense material can be cut into thin, even slices. In wood anatomy the three standard planes — transverse, radial and tangential — are cut from small blocks to show vessels, fibres, rays and growth rings, which makes the instrument useful in college and university botany departments, forestry and timber research institutes and plant anatomy labs; zoology and anatomy labs use it for bone.
Hard specimens are usually softened before cutting, for example by soaking or boiling wood blocks in water, and the razor edge is kept wet while cutting. Tighten the razor with the spanner supplied, set the feed for the thickness required, and make each cut in one smooth stroke. After each session wipe sawdust and water from the slide ways, oil them with the oil can, and keep the razor guarded.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the minimum order is 10 microtomes.
- Spare razors — one heavy-duty razor is supplied; extra razors, a leather strop and honing stones can be quoted with the order.
- Bench space — allow for the 85 x 40 cm footprint when planning the work bench.
- Delivery details — for export, give the destination country, port or city and preferred terms such as FOB or CIF.
Frequently Asked Questions
How large a specimen does the Wood Microtome take?
Specimens up to 8 x 5 cm, held in an object vice that opens to 80 x 50 mm. The object can be raised through 30 mm of vertical displacement.
What section thickness can it cut?
Up to 30 microns, set in steps of 1 micron.
Which accessories come with it?
A special heavy-duty razor with back, a set of three object holders, two vices, a spanner for tightening the razor, two L-keys, a screwdriver and an oil can.
What does “Jung type” mean?
It refers to the design pattern the microtome follows. JLab builds this microtome itself, and the name does not imply that it is made by or affiliated with any other company.
How does it differ from the Sliding Microtome?
This model takes much larger specimens (up to 8 x 5 cm) on 42 cm slide ways and cuts up to 30 microns; the Sliding Microtome is listed with a 31 x 26 mm object stage, a 27 cm track and a 1–50 micron range for paraffin and celloidin specimens.
How much bench space does it need?
The overall horizontal dimensions are 85 x 40 cm, so it needs a sturdy bench with clear space around the slide ways.
What details should an export enquiry give?
The quantity, destination country and port or city, delivery terms such as FOB or CIF, any packing or labelling requirements, and the tender reference if applicable.
Who manufactures the Wood Microtome?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab) builds it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India, and quotes for it as the manufacturer.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a botany and laboratory equipment manufacturer in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The Wood Microtome is built in JLab’s own works rather than sourced from a trader, so universities, forestry institutes, dealers and importers buy it directly from the maker; each microtome is visually inspected before dispatch, and spare razors, vices and repeat orders are handled by the manufacturer. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Uganda in East Africa, DR Congo in Central Africa, Qatar in the Middle East, Finland in Northern Europe and Afghanistan in South Asia. Details for tender purchases are on the JLab lab tenders page.
