Why the Second Edge Reads in Reverse
With one edge running 0 to 100 and the other 100 to 0, a length can be read from either end without turning the scale round. That helps when the zero has to sit against a fixed point on the right, such as a wall, a clamp stand or the end of a bench.
Classroom Uses
A wooden metre rule is the usual beam for the principle of moments, balanced on a knife edge with masses hung along it, and it measures pendulum lengths, the spacing of a lens and screen, or a run of ticker tape. Store it flat or hanging so it stays straight.
