What Is the Abbe Refractometer Used For?
A drop of liquid is spread as a thin film in the narrow gap between the two prisms. Light passing through the film produces a sharp boundary between a bright and a dark field in the telescope; the boundary position depends on the critical angle, so turning the arm to set it on the cross-wires gives the refractive index on the graduated sector. With ordinary white light the boundary shows coloured fringes, and the compensator prisms are turned until it becomes sharp and colourless — their setting is also used to work out the mean dispersion. The sugar scale converts the same reading into sugar percentage, which is useful for syrups, juices and other sugar solutions.
Typical work includes identifying and checking the purity of organic liquids, essential oils and edible oils, measuring the concentration of solutions, and the college physics practical on finding the refractive index of a liquid. Because refractive index changes with temperature, note the thermometer reading with every result.
