What Is a Digital Refractometer Used For?
A refractometer measures how strongly a liquid bends light, its refractive index. In sugar solutions the refractive index rises with the amount dissolved, and the Brix scale expresses that as a percentage of sucrose by mass, so the instrument gives a quick sugar reading from a few drops of sample. Fruit-juice, soft-drink, syrup and jam makers use it for quality control, growers use it to judge fruit ripeness, and food-technology, agriculture and physics departments use it to teach refraction and solution concentration.
Refractive index also changes with temperature, so the automatic temperature compensation corrects the Brix reading and reduces the need to bring every sample to one fixed temperature. The digital readout reduces the reading errors that come from judging a scale line by eye, and the dust-proof cover protects the prism between measurements.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Model — DG-NXT or DG-ERT, and the quantity of each.
- Data needs — mention whether you plan to print or log readings through the serial interface.
- Other refractometers — an Abbe or butyro refractometer for refractive-index or oil work is a separate item on the same enquiry.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does this digital refractometer read?
Sugar content on the Brix scale, shown on a digital readout. The Brix value is derived from the refractive index of the sample.
What does automatic temperature compensation do?
It corrects the Brix reading for the temperature of the sample, because refractive index changes as a liquid warms or cools.
Can readings be printed?
Yes. The refractometer has a serial interface intended for data print-out.
Which models are offered?
Two: DG-NXT and DG-ERT. Name the model you want in your enquiry.
How does it differ from an Abbe refractometer?
The Abbe refractometer is listed for refractive index and mean dispersion of liquids, solids and powders, with a sugar-percentage scale and a thermometer on its double prism. This digital model gives a direct Brix reading on a display, with automatic temperature compensation.
What should an export enquiry include?
Model and quantity, destination country and port or city, delivery terms such as FOB or CIF, and any tender reference.
Who supplies the Digital Refractometer?
JLab (Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd), Ambala, India, supplies it alongside the laboratory equipment it makes itself.
Supplier
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. Next to its own range of laboratory and teaching equipment, JLab supplies selected analytical instruments such as this digital refractometer, so food-testing labs, colleges and dealers can order them together; every unit is visually inspected before it is dispatched. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Turkey in the Middle East, Tonga in Oceania, Libya in North Africa, Honduras in Central America and the Caribbean and Bangladesh in South Asia.
Other Refractometers
- ABBE Refractometer — refractive index and mean dispersion of liquids, solids and powders, with a sugar-percentage scale.
- Butyro Refractometer — reads fats and oils directly on the butyro scale, with a water-jacketed prism box.
- Refractometer (Digital) — a portable two-button digital refractometer for food products, reading sugar as % Brix.
