Anaerobic Culture Jar, polycarbonate 3.5 litreTransparent polycarbonate, 3.5 litre capacityValved aluminium die-cast lid with pressure, vacuum and safety valves and a compound gauge, plus a plain lid for gas packsStainless steel Petri plate carrier (10 dishes) and test tube carrier

Choose this jar for the traditional McIntosh and Fildes design with needle valves and a cold-catalyst sachet in a glass body; choose the polycarbonate jar when you want a gauge-equipped valved lid and a separate gas-pack lid, with carriers for both plates and tubes.

What Is the Anaerobic Culture Jar Used For?

Obligate anaerobes, such as Clostridium and Bacteroides species, do not grow in ordinary air, so their plates are incubated in a sealed jar from which the oxygen has been removed. In this pattern the air is drawn out through one needle valve and a hydrogen-containing gas is admitted through the other, or a gas pack is used in place of a cylinder, and the catalyst makes the remaining oxygen combine with hydrogen to form water. The original McIntosh and Fildes jar heated its catalyst electrically; this one is listed for a cold catalyst, which works at room temperature, and the pressure gauge shows the state of the jar while it is evacuated and filled.

It is standard microbiology lab equipment for anaerobic culture practicals in BSc and MSc microbiology, medical, veterinary and pharmacy college labs and in research laboratories; the sealed jar is kept in an incubator during growth.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the minimum order is 10 jars; teaching labs often plan one jar per practical group.
  • Catalyst — the jar is supplied without catalyst; plan the cold catalyst as a separate purchase.
  • Other microbiology items — Petri dishes, inoculating needles and an incubator are separate catalogue items that can be quoted on the same enquiry.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does McIntosh and Fildes pattern mean?
It is the classic anaerobic jar design named after the two bacteriologists who described it: a sealed jar with valves in the lid for removing air and admitting gas, and a catalyst that removes the oxygen left behind. This version has a glass jar, a metal cover with two needle valves and a sachet for a cold catalyst.

Is the catalyst supplied with the jar?
No. The jar has a sachet for holding the catalyst but is supplied without catalyst, so the catalyst is ordered separately.

Can the jar be used with gas packs?
Yes. It is listed for use both with a gas cylinder and with gas packs.

How does it differ from the polycarbonate Anaerobic Culture Jar?
That model is a 3.5 litre transparent polycarbonate jar with a die-cast aluminium lid carrying pressure, vacuum and safety valves and a compound gauge, plus a plain lid for gas packs and carriers for plates and tubes. This one is the glass McIntosh and Fildes pattern with needle valves and a cold-catalyst sachet.

What information is needed for an export quotation?
Send the quantity, the destination country and port or city, your preferred delivery terms (for example FOB or CIF), any packing or labelling needs, and the tender reference if the order is for a tender.

Who manufactures this anaerobic culture jar?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, trading as JLab, makes it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India, and quotes for it directly.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a microbiology and laboratory equipment manufacturer in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The jar is assembled at JLab’s own works rather than bought from a trader, so colleges, dealers and importers order it factory-direct and repeat orders come from the manufacturer itself. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Mexico in North America, Japan in East Asia, Ethiopia in East Africa, Cameroon in Central Africa and Serbia in Southern Europe. Information for tender buyers is on the JLab lab tenders page.
