What Is the Student Polarimeter Used For?
Its standard use is the B.Sc. practical on the specific rotation of a cane sugar solution, and it also serves chemistry work on optical activity such as following the inversion of cane sugar. Students first set the analyser so that both halves of the half-shade field look equally bright with the tube empty or filled with water, then fill the tube with the solution and turn the analyser until the halves match again; the difference in scale readings is the angle of rotation. Specific rotation is that angle divided by the tube length in decimetres (200 mm is 2 dm) and the concentration in g/ml. A Laurent half-shade plate is made for monochromatic sodium light, so a sodium lamp is normally used with it.
