Choose the Advanced Soil Kit when students will handle and test the soils themselves: the bags are large and labelled, and loam and gravel are included alongside the four soils of the basic Soil Kit. The two reference collections hold smaller, sieved amounts of many more soils for classification work.

What Is the Advanced Soil Kit Used For?

The six samples cover the range of textures students meet in the field. Gravel soil has coarse, stony particles and drains freely; sandy soil is gritty and drains quickly; loam is a balanced mix of sand, silt and clay; clay is fine, sticky and holds water; peat-loam is rich in decomposed plant matter; and calcareous soil contains calcium carbonate, so it fizzes with dilute acid. With 3 kg of soil in all, a class can run texture-by-feel, drainage and water-holding, carbonate and pH tests, or grade the soils with a sieve set, guided by the teaching notes. The kit suits school geography and science lessons on soil types and agriculture or environmental science courses.

Close the bags after use and keep them dry so the samples stay in good condition for the next class.
