Barlow's Wheel Apparatus Manufacturer,Supplier and Exporter in India
Product Code : EL-SLE-4802
Jlab Export is a leading Barlow's Wheel Apparatus Manufacturer, and suppliers in India
Barlow's Wheel Apparatus (code EL-SLE-4802) is a battery-powered demonstration in which a wheel carrying a direct current turns in a magnetic field, used in school and college physics lessons on the motor effect. Neodymium-iron-boron magnets produce a strong field above the wheel, which starts to move as soon as current passes through it, and the unit runs on AA batteries. It is made by Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab) at its works in Ambala, India.

What Is Barlow's Wheel Used For?
Barlow’s wheel, named after the English physicist Peter Barlow, is one of the earliest electric motors and is still the simplest way to show that a magnetic field pushes on a current. Current flows through the wheel between its axle and its rim; in the magnetic field each part of that current feels a force at right angles to both the current and the field, as Fleming’s left-hand rule predicts, so the wheel is pushed round. Reversing either the current or the field reverses the force. Teachers use it for the force on a current-carrying conductor in class 10 science (magnetic effects of electric current) and class 12 physics (moving charges and magnetism), and to compare this coil-free, commutator-free design with a full electric motor model.
Fit the AA batteries just before the lesson, run the wheel in short demonstrations and take the batteries out before the apparatus goes back into storage. Neodymium magnets are very strong: keep them away from watches, phones and magnetic cards, and do not let loose magnets snap together, as they can chip or pinch fingers.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the minimum order is 10 units, enough for a demonstration set in each physics room or for a group activity.
- Batteries — ask how many AA cells the unit takes and whether they are packed with it, especially for export shipments.
- Related demonstrations — add a Fleming apparatus or an electric motor model to the same enquiry if you teach the full motor-effect sequence.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Barlow's wheel demonstrate?
It demonstrates the motor effect: a direct current flowing through the wheel inside a magnetic field produces a force that turns the wheel. It is a clear first example before students meet coils and commutators.
What power supply does it need?
It runs on AA batteries. The listing does not state how many cells it takes or whether they are included, so confirm both with JLab when you ask for a quotation.
Why does it use neodymium-iron-boron magnets?
NdFeB magnets are among the strongest permanent magnets available, so they give a strong field above the wheel. A stronger field means a larger force on the current, which lets the wheel turn on battery power.
Can the direction of rotation be reversed?
In principle, yes: reversing the current or the magnetic field reverses the force and so the direction of rotation, which is a useful check of Fleming’s left-hand rule. Ask JLab how the current direction is changed on this unit.
How is it different from an electric motor model?
Barlow’s wheel passes current straight through a wheel and has no coil or commutator. JLab’s Electric Motor Model, linked below, is listed with a disc-type commutator and brushes and runs on 6–8 V DC, so it shows how a practical motor keeps turning.
Who manufactures Barlow's wheel apparatus?
JLab (Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd) builds it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India, and quotes for it direct.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, an Indian manufacturer of physics demonstration and school laboratory equipment, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The apparatus is assembled at JLab’s own works rather than sourced from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers deal directly with the manufacturer, every unit is visually inspected before dispatch, and repeat orders are handled in-house. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Panama in Central America and the Caribbean, Afghanistan in South Asia, Lesotho in Southern Africa, Australia in Oceania and Finland in Northern Europe. For institutional purchases, see the JLab lab tenders page.
Electromagnetism Demonstrations
- Fleming Apparatus — Fleming’s apparatus for DC supplies up to 6 V, 3 A.
- Electric Motor Model — a working demonstration motor with a disc-type commutator and phosphor-bronze brushes.
- Dynamo (AC/DC) - Motor Working Model — a motor-driven dynamo model with a bulb that glows while it turns.
- Neodymium magnets — compact cylindrical neodymium permanent magnets for projects and demonstrations.
