How Does It Compare with Other JLab Resonance Apparatus?

ModelPipeOther listed details
This apparatus (EL-SLE-4705)Stainless steel pipe with reservoirComplete with all stainless steel accessories
Resonance Tube Apparatus25 mm stainless steel pipeListed as superior quality
Resonance Apparatus (model JL279)Heavy pipe mounted beside a metre scaleLocates resonance positions in air columns from the water level and fork frequency

All three are used for the same speed-of-sound experiment. Choose this one when you want the stainless steel pipe and reservoir supplied with its full set of stainless steel accessories; the resonance tube apparatus listing states its pipe bore, and the JL279 listing describes its scale mounting.

What Is the Resonance Apparatus Used For?

It is the apparatus for the resonance tube experiment in class 11 physics: determining the speed of sound in air at room temperature from two resonance positions. The pipe and reservoir are filled with water, a tuning fork is struck on a rubber pad and held just above the open end, and the water level is lowered slowly until the air column sounds loudest. That length is the first resonance; lowering the water further gives the second. For a pipe closed by water, the speed of sound equals twice the fork frequency multiplied by the difference between the two resonance lengths, so the end correction cancels out. Colleges use the same set-up for air-column and end-correction work.

Never strike the fork on the pipe or a hard bench, as that can damage the fork and change its note. Hold the vibrating fork close to, but not touching, the mouth of the pipe, and drain and dry the apparatus after the practical.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the minimum order is 10 units; labs often plan one apparatus per group.
  • Accessory list — ask JLab to list the stainless steel accessories supplied, so you know whether to order tuning forks and a rubber pad separately.
  • Tuning forks — the fork frequencies your practical uses, if you are adding a fork set to the order.

Frequently Asked Questions

What experiment is the resonance apparatus used for?
Finding the speed of sound in air with a tuning fork and water. The air column above the water resonates with the fork at particular lengths, and the speed of sound follows from those lengths and the fork frequency.

What is the pipe made of?
Stainless steel. The apparatus also has a reservoir for setting the water level, and its accessories are stainless steel as well.

Are tuning forks included?
The listing says the apparatus is complete with all accessories but does not itemise them, so confirm with JLab whether a fork is part of the set. JLab also lists tuning fork sets separately, linked below.

What length and diameter is the pipe?
These are not stated in this listing. Ask JLab for the dimensions with your quotation; if you need a stated bore, the resonance tube apparatus listing gives one.

Who manufactures this resonance apparatus?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab), at its own works in Ambala, Haryana, India.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of school and college physics apparatus in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The resonance apparatus is produced at JLab’s own works and not bought in from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers buy it factory-direct, every unit is visually inspected before dispatch, and repeat orders and spare parts are handled by the manufacturer. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Bahrain in the Middle East, Moldova in Eastern Europe, Mauritius in East Africa, Denmark in Northern Europe and the USA in North America. For tender purchases, see the JLab lab tenders page.
