What Is the Beehive Shelf Used For?
A beehive shelf is a small domed stand with a hole in the top and an opening in the side. For collecting a gas over water, it is placed on the bottom of a pneumatic trough filled with water, a gas jar full of water is turned upside down on top of it, and the delivery tube from the reaction flask is pushed in through the side opening. The gas rises through the top hole and pushes the water out of the jar. This method suits gases that are only slightly soluble in water, such as hydrogen and oxygen, in class 10 and class 11 chemistry practicals and college labs.
The glazed stoneware does not soak up water or chemicals, rinses clean, and is heavy enough to stay on the bottom of the trough. Rinse and dry the shelf after use, avoid knocking it against the sink or other ceramics, and replace any shelf that is chipped or cracked.
