What Is a Botanical Vasculum Used For?
Freshly cut plants wilt and bruise quickly once they are out of the ground. A vasculum keeps them in a closed, rigid case so leaves, flowers and stems stay fresh and uncrushed until they reach the plant press. Specimens are laid flat along the length of the case, and a sheet of damp paper or cloth inside helps keep them moist on a long walk; the cork lining also insulates the inside from the heat of the metal. Back in the laboratory the plants are pressed and dried, mounted on herbarium sheets and filed in a herbarium cabinet. Schools use a vasculum for plant-collection and herbarium projects in biology, and colleges for botany field excursions and ecology surveys.
Choose the 45 cm case for leaves, small herbs and flowering shoots, and the 60 cm case when longer stems or whole plants have to be carried. After each trip empty the case, wipe it out and leave it open until the cork is completely dry, so the lining stays free of mould. Collect only where permission has been given, and keep the vasculum in the shade while you work.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a botanical vasculum used for?
It is used to carry plant specimens collected in the field so that they stay fresh and undamaged until they can be pressed for a herbarium or studied in the lab.
Which sizes are available?
Two sizes are listed: 45 cm x 15 cm x 25 cm and 60 cm x 20 cm x 30 cm. The larger case takes longer stems and bigger specimens.
What is the vasculum made of?
The case is 22 SWG aluminium sheet, about 0.71 mm thick, painted on the outside and lined inside with 2 mm cork sheet. Aluminium is a light metal, which helps when the case is carried on its shoulder strap.
How can specimens be kept fresh inside it?
Lay them flat, add a sheet of damp paper or cloth, close the case and keep it out of direct sun. Press the specimens the same day if you can.
Is a plant press included?
No. This listing covers the vasculum only; the plant press, herbarium press and herbarium cabinet are separate items linked below.
What details are needed for an export quotation?
Send the quantity of each size, the destination country and port or city, delivery terms such as FOB or CIF, any packing or labelling needs, and the tender reference if there is one.
Who manufactures the botanical vasculum?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, trading as JLab, makes it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of biology and science laboratory equipment in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road in Ambala, Haryana. The vasculum is fabricated in JLab’s own works and not sourced from a trader, which means schools, colleges, dealers and importers buy straight from the factory, each case is visually checked before it is packed, and repeat orders are handled by the maker. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Sri Lanka in South Asia, Morocco in North Africa, Lesotho in Southern Africa, Mexico in North America and Chad in Central Africa.

- Plant Press — a screw-and-bolt press for flattening and drying the specimens you collect.
