What Is Chromatography Paper Used For?
Paper chromatography works because the components of a mixture travel up the wet paper at different rates: some are held more strongly by the paper, others are carried further by the solvent. In school science it shows that one ink or food colour can contain several dyes; in senior chemistry practicals and college labs, unknown spots are compared with known substances by their Rf value — the distance moved by the spot divided by the distance moved by the solvent front. Spot the sample on a pencil start line, stand the paper in a covered jar with the solvent below the spot, and remove it before the solvent reaches the top.
