What Is the Paper Chromatography Kit Used For?
Paper chromatography separates the components of a mixture as a solvent moves through the paper and carries each component a different distance. The Rf value of a spot — the distance it has moved divided by the distance moved by the solvent front — is then used to identify components by comparison with known substances. Running the paper inside a closed cabinet keeps the air around it saturated with solvent vapour, which helps the solvent front rise evenly, and the sliding glass front lets students watch the separation without opening the lid.
The kit is meant for chemistry and biochemistry practicals in colleges and medical colleges, such as separating amino acids, sugars or plant pigments; the glass sprayer is used to apply a locating reagent that makes colourless spots visible.
