What Is the Sedimentary Rock Collection Used For?
Sedimentary rocks record conditions at the Earth’s surface, and the named specimens fall into three easy teaching groups. Clastic rocks are built from fragments: rounded pebbles in conglomerate, sand grains in sandstone, and fine clay and silt in mudstone and shale, which splits into thin layers. Chemical and biological rocks form from dissolved or living material: limestone and chalk are calcium carbonate and fizz in dilute acid, chert and flint are hard microcrystalline silica with sharp, curved fracture, diatomite is a light rock of diatom skeletons, rock salt is an evaporite, and rock phosphate is a raw material for phosphate fertiliser. Bituminous coal is an organic rock formed from compacted plant remains. Because they form in layers at the surface, sedimentary rocks are also where most fossils are found. The set fits school geography and science lessons on rock types and the rock cycle, and college geology practicals.
How Does It Compare with the Igneous and Metamorphic Sets?
| Collection | Origin of the rocks | Some specimens named |
|---|---|---|
| This collection (EL-ERAM-4352) | Deposited at the surface and in water | Conglomerate, sandstone, shale, chalk, flint, rock salt, coal |
| Collection of 15 Igneous Rocks | Solidified from magma or lava | Granite, gabbro, basalt, obsidian, pumice |
| Collection of 15 Metamorphic Rocks | Changed by heat and pressure | Marble, slate, gneiss, quartzite, anthracite |
Order all three to cover each stage of the rock cycle; this set alone suits a unit on weathering, erosion and deposition.
